TWENTY-THREE

Kate forced open the door of her apartment with a sigh and stepped through the threshold. Dropping her luggage by the entrance, she glanced around and then made her way to the small window over her bed. Pushing back the curtains, she let light filter in the dark apartment and instantly her mood lifted.

It was Friday evening.

Kate and Luke had stepped off a plane at SFO only an hour ago, back from their business trip in San Diego. Luke had dropped her off outside her apartment, the tension between them strained. At Kate’s insistence, he’d left without seeing her up.

She was happy to be home. She looked around her apartment, noting that everything was exactly where she left it. That same comforting smell of old books and lemongrass permeated the air, ever dependable. Kate marveled at how much had happened since the last time she’d been in here.

Luke and Kate hadn’t resumed their…activities.

After he rejected her resignation letter, they fell into an uncomfortable, and tense, peace. They had a mutual silent agreement that for the remainder of the business trip, they would not speak about what happened between them in the filing room or in the hotel.

But Kate had a feeling that since they were back in San Francisco, that same agreement no longer applied.

They’d finished their work in San Diego with efficient—albeit sexually charged—late nights. Luke hadn’t left any doubt in her mind that he wanted her. But he made it clear that it was up to her when—not if—they would start up again.

Luke wasn’t a man a woman could say no to.

But what frustrated Kate was that she didn’t even know if she wanted to say no anymore.

With a shake of her head, Kate tried to push all thoughts of Luke out of her mind. She needed to unwind after a week of almost constantly being in his presence. And she told herself that she would not miss him. Not even a little bit.

To distract herself, she unpacked her suitcase and straightened out her already neat apartment. Eventually, she pulled out her laptop from the case, deciding that it was past time she wrote something. Her mind hadn’t been in the right state for it this past week, but she endeavored to get at least a couple chapters finished tonight.

Hopefully that would keep thoughts of a maddening, sexy, blue-eyed man from invading her mind…
